The Georgia coast - Jekyll Island / St Simon
This is where we spent the 4th. If you don’t know why we love the South so much then I’m not sure I can explain it. I just love the fabric it is made from.

Brunswick, Georgia and the Golden Isles New Years 2008/2009
Obviously I spend a lot of time with my family in Coastal Georgia. It is our favorite getaway and one of the last unspoiled areas on the American Atlantic Coast.
A friend of mine, artist Todd Murphy, described the marshes of coastal Georgia as a “prehistoric soup”. That’s pretty accurate when you think of the complex and rich eco-system around this part of the state. We took a short trip out on a shrimp boat and trawled through the river marshes and pulled in a LOT of shrimp, eel, squid, crab, and a lot of various fish. I’ll post a movie of our boat trip and haul next post. The plight of the shrimpers in America has become critical. Our government has let Thailand flood our markets with cheap bulk shrimp – shrimp that in most cases has remained frozen for a full year before it reaches your plate. Between government regulation and the price of diesel fuel for the shrimp boats, each year it becomes more cost prohibitive to stay in business for these shrimpers. A few years ago there were over 400 shrimp boats registered for coastal Georgia. Today there are 67. No one believes the industry will last more than a few years without change. The marsh rivers are supposed to be dredged by the government every five years. This keeps the waterways clean of debris and navigable for shrimpers and boats. They haven’t been dredged in fifteen years because (according to one local shrimper) all of the the federal equipment is in Iraq dredging the waterways there. Try to look at the shrimp you buy, and don’t buy shrimp frozen and imported from Thailand.
Here are a few snaps from my latest vacation to coastal Georgia. For more Coastal Georgia pics, check out the Brunswick tag to in the right column . I shoot in this area a lot- for myself, for magazine editorial, and for commercial clients. I know all the nooks and crannies !
Brunswick, Georgia and Saint Simons Island for thanksgiving 2008
Coastal Georgia is one of my favorite places because it is one of the East Coast’s last wild areas. The overdevelopment that has plagued the Outer Banks, Long Island, et al hasn’t really scarred the Ga coast yet. Mainly I think that is because so many of the Georgia barrier Islands are Federally protected areas- Cumberlamd Island national seashore, Jekyll Island State Park, Sapelo Island just to name a few of them.
Brunswick was founded in 1771 and in 1789 George Washington proclaimed Brunswick as one of the five ports of entry for the American States.
We have been exploring Coastal Georgia for many years and we spend a lot of time there. I have three slide shows from the area. The first two are the holidays over Thanksgiving 2008 and the third is a series of b/w photos I’ve taken of the area. We traditonally eat Thanksgiving dinner mid-day at Crane Cottage, on Jekyll Island. In the holiday slide show, you’ll see us collecting 60 million year old fossilized shark teeth on the beaches - one of our favorite pastimes (along with sea kayaking, crabbing and beach combing).
