A quote from a make up artist friend living in NY now

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 | crew | No Comments

I miss this friend!  he emailed me today- I had asked him how the NY market was holding up during the economic slowdown.  Years ago we shot this beauty image together.  At the time I remember him saying to me (as I was shooting) that he didn’t like the pose because he’d never use it.  It’s been in his portfolio ever since!  Ha HA you never know!

“Troubles?  What troubles?  Who’s Sarah Palin?  Of course Oprah will give me a car and tell me the Secret and pay my rent in advance for 20 years.  And I’m going to invent the new and improved post-it note, thereby never having to worry about whence the money will come for my Depends.

Plus, I’m too smart not to know I’m too dumb to be making any economic forecasts.  I just know I’m broker than normal and not seeing any solutions on the horizon.  I hear a lot of similar chatter, but find that if I just nestle my head a little deeper in the sand I can hardly hear it.  In fact, I think I can hear the ocean sometimes, instead.  Yeah, that’s right.  The ocean.  You should try it sometime; it’s great.

PS  Have you ever considered taking up the banjo in your spare time? If we both did, we could play dueling banjoes on YouTube and amaze the whole world.  And maybe be rich, too.  Or not.  “

My friends in London added :

“It is bound to be tough for everyone, but at the end of the day it is going to be the less well prepared and bigger businesses that will suffer most. A journalist recently wrote about a terrible meal he’d had where the staff were disdainful and the food wasn’t up to the billing expected. He commented that the plus side of this recession is that there will be fewer of the  bad restaurants left when it is over. Although of course it doesn’t always work out like that and it could equally be that setting up any new business is difficult in the first year of trading even in a good economic climate.”

“Everywhere I go I’m asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don’t stifle enough of them. There’s many a best-seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher.”
- Flannery O’Connor

“We have always found the Irish a bit odd. They refuse to be English.”
- Winston Churchill

“Beware of the man whose God is in the skies.”
- George Bernard Shaw

“This is one race of people for whom psychoanalysis is of no use whatsoever.”
- Sigmund Freud (speaking about the Irish)
